Our History

1968:

The Youth Center opens its doors

Since then we have successfully served thousands of children in Warren, Washington, and Saratoga Counties!

Hopping from (not-so-great) place to (not-so-great) place

The first few locations of the Youth Center were anything but ideal—cramped, dirty, and dismal. It was clear that our members deserved much better.

1982:

The arrival of Mr. Youth Center!

When the Executive Director went on maternity leave, Matt Congdon stepped into what he thought would be a temporary role. He ended up taking over the position permanently, and began a 36-year journey of loving, supporting, and advocating for our members.

If you build it, they will come

Matt had a dream that one day there would be a brand new building just for the youngsters in this area, a place that they could call home—a  sanctuary. So, he did the impossible: raised one million dollars in eight months to make the current Youth Center building a reality.

2000:

Welcome home

In April 2000, the doors of our building at 60 Montcalm Street opened for the first time. After a surprise spring snowstorm the morning of the opening, Matt shoveled the parking lot himself! And shortly after, crowds of kids, wide-eyed and smiling, walked inside. That day is one that will never be forgotten.

Bringing our building to life

When you step inside the Youth Center, the first thing you notice is the beautiful art that adorns our walls. Matt’s brother, Bob Congdon, spent ten months transforming every inch of the building’s while walls. His art sparks creativity, promotes positive lessons, and inspires kids of all ages. It’s truly magical.

2018:

Happy 50th Birthday!

In 2018 we celebrated 50 years by having a huge Youth Center reunion. It was so neat to see current and former members come together for this event. Stories were shared, pictures were taken, and past and present became one.

2019:

Legacy of love

Matt ran this organization for 36 years. Sadly, after years of battling health complications, we lost our leader on June 13, 2019. We will forever remember his contagious smile, generous heart, and courageous spirit. Following his passing, Matt’s daughter, Molly Congdon-Hunsdon, took the reins to continue his legacy of love.

Always moving forward

Today, we have an incredible staff—each firmly committed to our mission. They are passionate about our cause, and they love our kids. Together, Molly, Carly, Anthony and Nate will continue to fundraise, engage with our community, and serve our members. The Youth Center has always been like a family, and we’re always ready to welcome more members to the group!
