Each year the youth center hosts a Summer Reading Program in August! The Summer Reading Program is for students entering the fifth grade to help ease their transition into the new school year, and also welcome them into the youth center as first-year members. While we serve all students in the fifth through twelfth grades in Warren, Washington, and Saratoga counties, fifth grade is also a particularly big year for our members at the Glens Falls School District because it marks their transition into middle school!

The Summer Reading Program will be on the first three Tuesdays and Thursdays of August from 11am-1pm. This program offers a chance for fifth graders to make up for some of the typical summer learning loss that occurs over the break, and practice some reading, writing, and math each day. A big focus for us during our 2021 program is to offer more hands-on learning and STEAM based education. In addition to the educational aspects, we will also be including some recreational activities into the day! Kids will have access to the youth center and our equipment to participate in games like pickleball, air hockey, and pool (just to name a few).

As always, the YC is also focusing on combatting local food insecurity. We will provide lunch each day for members of the Summer Reading Program! Due to the pandemic, we are offering food in to-go containers. Weather, permitting, kids are welcome to sit outside on our front lawn and enjoy their lunch when the day ends at 1pm each day, or they can choose to take their meal home with them! All members of the Summer Reading Program are also able to stick around for the rest of the day and enjoy the YC for our regular operating hours, until 5pm.

We have a certain number of slots open for the SRP this year due to pandemic induced capacity limitations, so be sure to secure your spot ASAP! Masks must be worn at all times while at the youth center, so please be sure to send your child with a mask each day. We can’t wait to welcome the next group of fifth graders into the YC family!
