Staying Social While Being Socially Distant
We are social beings and thrive off of human interaction. The last ten months have kept us at least six feet apart, add on the colder temperatures we’re experiencing, and those winter blues may feel harder than ever.
There are plenty of ways to stay social even in the age of social distancing, so here’s a list of some of our favorites:
Make a craft and drop it off in a friend’s mailbox! Working on an art project can be incredibly satisfying and help pass the time, but it’s even better when you get to share it with a friend. Sharing your handmade item with a friend is a wonderful way to let them know you’re thinking of them.
Video Chat! This may seem like an obvious answer, but you’d be surprised how many people still haven’t taken advantage of platforms like Zoom, Facetime, and Google Hangouts. Have lunch together over a video call, catch up over some tea, or even play games together in this convenient and safe way.
Find a pen pal! With technology like texting we are almost always in constant contact with people. But when was the last time you received a letter in the mail? Handwriting letters to friends you are distanced from is another great way to keep in touch.
Hang signs and artwork up in your window to surprise and delight your neighbors! A simple act of positivity can have such a big impact on those around you. Putting a smile on their face will only inspire them to pass it on.
Play video games together! There are a wide variety of games that allow you to play with your friends, some even give you the ability to chat while playing! At the Youth Center we have loved hosting Among Us games because it’s a great chance for us to chat with you all and also have some fun together.
However you choose to stay connected, know that we are always here if you need a friend to talk to. Staying safe is the most important thing right now, but it’s not forever, and before you know it we will be back together playing dodgeball in the gym! We can do this!
