Get Some Fresh Air!

Finding a place to stretch your legs and get some fresh air can feel pretty tricky after several months indoors, but sunshine and movement are crucial to keeping your mood up during these winter months. We are so fortunate to live in an area that has several beautiful bike trails, walking paths, and lakes and ponds to explore.

When I’m in need of an easy walk in the woods, one of my favorite places to visit is the Hudson Pointe Nature Preserve in Queensbury. Hudson Pointe is a series of little trails that take you on your own educational adventure. There are several signs placed along the trail that will describe different plants and wildlife that can be found in the area. The preserve is open seven days a week during daylight hours, and you can even bring your dog on a leash!

While Hudson Pointe is an easier, family friendly walking trail, it’s always important to be prepared when you are out exploring, especially in the winter months. Make sure you are wearing proper shoes with a thick tread that will not only keep your feet warm, but provide enough ankle support as you walk over roots and uneven ground. If it is icy, prepare with snowshoes or micro-spikes on your boots, or turn around and try again a different day! Always venture out with a buddy, and be sure to tell someone where you plan to be hiking/walking. I always send my location from my iphone to my parent’s phones when I go out because I want them to know where I am in case of an emergency. Wear layers to keep warm, and always bring a water bottle and snacks! Whenever I step foot onto a trail, even one I have walked a bunch of times, I always prepare for the unexpected.

It is so important that you are getting fresh air and exercise during the pandemic, but make sure to bring a mask for when you are passing others on the trail! Getting outside is great for your physical health but it’s also a crucial part in taking care of your mental health.
